Students externing with Hy-Line North America will have the opportunity to experience poultry medicine in a field setting. Focuses will be on preventative medicine and epidemiology in both flocks and hatcheries. Hands on experience will be evaluating vaccination protocols, reviewing historical health data and issues in a flock, developing treatment plans, and enhancing the understanding of the intersections between health management and husbandry.
Hy-Line North America and Hy-Line International employ six veterinarians within the continental United States and have a fully staffed laboratory with ELISA, PCR, salmonella enrichment, and other capabilities.
Student responsibilities will be Monday through Friday, mostly during normal business hours but with several overnight trips to locations. Student is expected to cover travel to and from the externship, but travel during the externship will be Hy-Line's responsibility.
Housing for the duration of the externship will be covered by Hy-Line North America (from first day to last day including weekends). Meals included will be any that occur while with Hy-Line veterinarians or staff (all weekday lunches, most breakfasts, dinner if traveling beyond Des Moines or if dining with veteriarians). Student will be responsible for weekend meals and entertainment, if they so choose.
