Description of Elective Experience: 

This program is a private practice ophthalmology service providing medical and surgical services to cats and dogs.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.: 

The Institute of Veterinary Specialists is staffed with an ophthalmologist, dermatologist, cardiologist, internist, neurologist, a visiting surgeon and multiple technicians.  The ophthalmology service has an operating microscope, phacoemulsification machine, electroretinogram, ultrasound, diode laser and all standard diagnostic equipment.  The ophthalmology service relies on the cardiology service for preoperative ECG and echocardiograms.  The ophthalmology service also interacts with the neurology service for advanced imaging, including CT and MRI.  The other specialists are always available for consultation and examinations.  

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?: 

The student will be responsible for providing support to the ophthalmology service and will have opportunities to use equipment and be involved with procedures based on their abilities and demonstration of a certain level of interest and aptitude.The student will shadow the doctor but is encouraged to participate in the daily functions of the service as their comfort level and knowledge dictates.
