Description of Elective Experience:
- Students will be travelling to off-site farms through the state of Iowa to observe commercial poultry sites.
- Learning Competencies:
At the completion of this course students are expected to be able to demonstrate the following:- Basic bird handling and husbandry
- Organization of the poultry industry and understanding of each management system
- Antemortem and post-mortem examination, interpreting records, biosecurity plans, immunization programs, infectious and non-infectious diseases, and moderate management practices to prevent poultry diseases are addressed.
Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.:
Two board-certified poultry veterinarians (ACPV) on site. Will be travlling to commercial poultry sites with instructor.
Travelling will be done in a 10-passenger van provided by the university.
Equipment will be provided by the instructor for post-mortem examinations.
Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?:

- Students are assessed on attendance, active participation, professionalism, and assignments throughout the 2 week rotation.
- Discussion and rounds during travel time to sites.
- Active participation and discussion during farm tours.
- Didactic lectures +/- necropsy.
