Johns Hopkins University Department of Molecular and Comparative Pathobiology, MD

Description of Elective Experience:

The Laboratory Animal Medicine externship provides clinical experience with a broad variety of species ranging from rodents to nonhuman primates.  LAM externs accompany program residents on their rounds, including at our macaque breeding colonies, and have the opportunity to do routine clinical procedures.  They assist in anesthesia and surgery; aid in the training of researchers and MDs using animal models and participate in ACLAM boards review activities.

The Anatomic Pathology externships allows for participation in necropsies of animals from our facilities, private veterinary practitioners, the Maryland Zoo and the National Aquarium.  Pathology externs will review slides with boarded pathologists and participate in gross and histopathology rounds.

Both externships provide extensive hands-on experience.

Veterinary students in their 3rd and 4th year of their veterinary training are welcome to immerse themselves in our training program for two (2) to eight (8) weeks.  This is an unpaid externship and availability of positions is limited.
