Description of Elective Experience: 

To provide additional in-depth training in feline-only medicine, including fear-free handling, common medical and surgical conditions, performing thorough physical exams, common dental issues, and the critical ways in which cats' medical needs are different from dogs'.  Conditions that will be explored in-depth include (but not limited to) chronic intestinal disease, chronic kidney disease, dentistry, anesthesia (including how to modify anesthetic and surgical procedures in cats with co-morbidities), immunology, diagnosing and treating inappropriate elimination and FIC, and common respiratory and ocular conditions. 
 

Our practice is AAHA-accredited and AAFP Feline friendly. Dr Pizzuli is board certified in Feline Practice and Veterinary Preventive Medicine. 

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.: 

5 additional staff members, DR radiology, DR dental radiology, high-speed dental drill, anesthetic monitors, tonography, ultrasound, outside laboratory services provided by IDEXX, access to JAVMA, JFMS, JAAHA, VIN, and full library. 

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?: 

Appointment hours for the clinic are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday 9am-4pm and Saturdays 8am-1pm.  Students are expected to participate on Saturdays as well as during the week.  Students will be encouraged to perform their own physical exams and present findings as well as discuss the history, exam findings, diagnoses, and treatment with the veterinarian.  Students should expect to develop additional skills such as collecting cytology, monitoring anesthesia, calculating drugs, basic feline handling, collecting blood pressure, tonography, dental radiograph review, suturing, and interpreting labwork findings.  Students will be expected to spend 8-10 hours per week in addition to appointment hours performing literature reviews on critical and upcoming feline medicine and surgergy topics, which may include diseases such as chronic intestinal disease, dentistry, acute kidney injury, and chronic kidney disease.
