The Livestock Services experience will be clinical veterinary medicine in a veterinary teaching hospital environment. The species consist primarily of beef cattle, but also sheep, goats, camelids and swine. Depending on caseload, the experience will be with both individual medicine and surgery in the clinic, as well as in the field.
This is a teaching hospital and clinic with ambulatory services. Two licensed technicians in the Livestock Services section, as well as three ACVIM boarded faculty and one advanced trained Field Services clinician.
The Livestock Services section is a 24/7 clinic. Faculty and House Officers rotate emergency duty, yet there is always a faculty and House Officer on call at the same time. Regular appointments are seen from 8 -5 Monday through Friday. Emergencies are seen between 5pm and 8am the following day and from 5pm Friday to 8am Monday morning on the weekends. There is a rotating emergency schedule. Students with assigned hospital cases are expected to maintain primary care of that patient. Hospital rounds are held daily to discuss clinic cases, cases seen in the field, and topics of importance in agricultural practices. Students are expected to participate in rounds.
