Description of Elective Experience: 

Kentucky Equine Hospital is a full-service surgical hospital, diagnostic imaging center, and ambulatory practice located outside of Louisville, KY.  We truly cover all aspects of equine veterinary medicine - surgery, general ambulatory practice, lameness/sports medicine with advanced diagnostic capabilities, reproduction (mare and stallion services), advanced ophthalmology, emergency services and alternative medicine. 

Our externship offers a great opportunity for veterinary students to gain knowledge and experience in all fields of equine practice. The externship is hands on depending on externs ability level and cases.  Externs actively participate in treatments and care of hospital patients, ambulatory calls, assistance/observation in surgeries, emergency cases and reproductive cases.  Externs are able to tailor their experience to their areas of interest.  

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.: 

Veterinarians -  6 (2 boarded surgeons, 2 boarded sports medicine and rehabilitation); 1-2 intern doctors yearly; Consulting DACVO and DACVIM specialist 

Our case load consists of 60% Lameness, Sports Medicine, Surgery, and diagnostic imaging: 40% Ambulatory medicine. We are a full-service hospital. Our services include but are not limited to: Digital Radiography, Digital Ultrasonography, Video Endoscopy/Gastroscopy, Nuclear Scintigraphy, MRI, PET Scan; CT (coming fall 2023), Surgery (Emergency and Routine), Nd:YAG Laser, Shock Wave Therapy, Stem Cell Therapy, IRAP, PRP; Reproduction (Artificial Insemination, Semen Processing, etc.), Embryo Transfer, and Laboratory Services. 

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?: 

Externs are encouraged to actively participate at our practive based on their skill and educational level.  We are a 24/7 facility and there is always something going on of interest.  Business hours are Mon-Fri from 8-5.  Busy season often brings longer days out on ambulatory calls. Emergency/after hours calls can be attended if externs wish. 

Student Housing (include costs, amenities, pet friendly, contact info if different from elective contact info): 

On site dormitory style housing is available at the clinic for externs.  There is a small kitchenette and lounge area available.
