Lane Animal Hospital, MI

Description of Elective Experience:

Typically in other student clinical externships, students see appointments, as well as drop off, urgent cares, and surgeries with their doctor. Our doctors perform preventative surgeries like spays and neuters, as well as dental cleanings and basic extractions weekly, but also regularly perform mass removals, some orthopedic procedures, as well as pyometras and cystotomies. We have a boarded surgeon who travels to us to perform TPLO's as well as fracture repair and amputations as needed by our clients. Imaging with radiography and ultrasound are performed on a daily basis for diagnosis also. We have an in house laboratory, but do send quite a bit to a reference lab for our doctors review and relaying to clients.

We are still 100% curbside service due to the ongoing pandemic and therefore the experience with appointments in our practice will be very different than previous externships. We should also note, should things change per executive orders from our Governor or Ohio's, we will continue to be compliant with any restrictions set forth by them pertaining to services, essential employees, etc.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.:

We are fully staffed 4 doctor GP practice with digital radiography and ultrasound.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?:

The student's responsibilities are typically based on the requirements set by the university to successfully complete their externship. We expect them to work the hours expected to successfully complete an externship. We are open Monday-Saturday and we would have them paired with a doctor's schedule, likely rotating between 2 doctors on our staff to have the most well-rounded GP experience- presuming that is the goal.
