Description of Elective Experience: 

Our two-doctor animal practice treats patients ranging from cats and dogs to goats, chickens, pigs, rabbits, guinea pigs, sugar gliders, hedgehogs, chinchillas, bearded dragons, geckos and snakes. The student will perform exams, treat patients, and have daily discussions with the veterinarians. We serve a diverse clientele and are located in beautiful Lebanon, OH. Depending on student and business needs, this would be a 2-8 week externship. This is a paid externship opportunity.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.: 

You would work alongside skilled DVMs, Registered Veterinary Technicians and Vet Assistants.

In-house diagnostic and treatment equipment includes: digital radiology, digital dental radiology, digital ultrasound, class III cold laser and designated surgical suite.

Surgical procedures could include: elective spays and neuters, gastropexy, mass removals, abdominal exploratories, cystotomies, enucleations, laceration repairs, amputations, resection and anastomosis, c-sections.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?: 
  • Flexible scheduling during your two-eight week stay with us. 
  • Work well with team members and supervising veterinarians
  • Review diagnostics, x-rays and discuss treatment plans and differentials with attending veterinarians
  • Assist in creating anesthetic protocols based on patient pre-anesthetic exam health and lab work
  • Observe or assist with surgical procedures
  • Observe or assist with complete oral health assessment and treatments including, cleaning, review of dental x-rays, oral nerve blocks, dental surgery and extractions and discuss treatment options with pet owners based on oral health findings.
  • Observe and assist with ultrasound with an experienced and seasoned veterinarian.
  • Observe and follow hospitalized cases to see ongoing treatment and progress of the patients.
  • Observe and assist in triaging patient acute or chronic illness
  • Perform exams during patient appointments depending on experience and skill level of the extern.
  • Utilize fear free patient handling practices
