Lineberger Veterinary Hospital, NC

Description of Elective Experience:

The extern is responsible for performing inpatient and outpatient medical care under the direct supervision of our veterinary staff. The extern will be expected to perform in-house diagnostic tests (hematology, chemistry, and radiology) with competence, perform routine client education, and to assist in surgical procedures. The hospital is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm, and Saturday from 8:00 am-12:00 pm. The extern is expected to arrive each morning no later than 7:45 am. Lunch is scheduled as appropriate, but efforts are made to provide 2 hours each day sometime between 11:30 am and 2:30 pm. The extern is expected to stay until all cases are effectively cared for before leaving at the end of the day; generally this is about 6:00 pm. Though not required, it is recommended that the extern comes in on Saturdays due to the volume and variety of cases seen. The extern is not scheduled for Sundays. Sundays can be used to rest, read, relax and reflect back upon the cases seen during the week.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.:

The primary purpose of our proposed program is to provide a realistic learning experience for 3rd and 4th year veterinary students. The program is set-up to run in 1-4 week blocks. We feel that the students that come in with an open mind and willingness to learn both medical and surgical skills will benefit most from our caseload. We see approximately 150 cases and perform over 15 surgeries each week. We have 4 clinical examination rooms, pharmacy, digital X-ray room, treatment room with recovery cages, surgical preparation area, and a fully equipped surgery suite with 2 surgery tables. We employ 3 full-time veterinarians, 3 full time RVT, and 4 full-time vet assistants (along with kennel personnel, groomers, receptionists and a practice manager). We have digital X-ray, ultrasound, cautery, suction, anesthesia monitoring (BP, CO2, Pulse Ox, ECG), dental machine, and 2 wet tables.
