Littlestown Veterinary Hospital, LLC, PA

Description of Elective Experience:

Littlestown Vet Hospital is a busy small animal/exotic hospital near Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, just north of the Maryland PA line.  We are non corporate and are a Fear Free Certified Practice.  We have multiple lasers, digital and dental x ray, and see a wide variety of interesting medical and surgical cases. We have five experienced doctors who enjoy consulting each other about cases every day and will provide outstanding mentoring. Our doctors have over 130 years of combined experience.  An apartment in the practice is available for externs.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.:

Fear Free Certified Practice

Fully staffed, 8 full time technicians, all certified, multiple part time technicians, enthusiastic client support team.  We have 5 doctors, one is certified in chiropractic and acupuncture.  Several of our doctors see exotic pets and some small ruminants in the hospital.  We do extensive dental surgery and care, as well as many non routine surgeries and some reproduction.

We have digital radiology and dental radiology, multiple lasers (therapy and surgical).  We use a traveling ultrasonographer and also have a traveling surgeon who comes in for major orthopedics etc.  We use Avimark PMS and are largely paperless.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?:

We are open from 8-5 MWF, and 8-7 T Th, 8-12 Saturday.  Student externs are welcome to shadow/work any of those hours and are encouraged to look at the schedule and pick appointments/surgeries that pique their interest.  We have vast experience with students from high school, tech school, college and vet school and everyone is fully in support of training more people in this challenging field.  We encourage student participation in whatever they are capable of doing (minimal for high school, much more involved for vet students obviously).  Vet students would be able to do some exams, discuss cases, make assessments, add notes to the record, and help with planning care and treatment.  They would also get experience with technical skills and surgical monitoring.  If the student is a 3-4 year vet student we would have them do more (with close observation).  We would expect externs to spend a minimum of 40 hours per week with us.  All our doctors are excellent mentors and we consult with each other every day.

Student Housing (include costs, amenities, pet friendly, contact info if different from elective contact info):

Free apartment above the practice, bedroom/bathroom, combined kitchen/living area.  Kitchen has a full refrigerator, microwave, small oven and hot plate.  Grocery store is 2 miles away.  Excellent pizza 1 mile away...  Access to wi fi.  We have not had any pets there but might consider it depending on the pet.
