Students will ride with vets to experience a normal working day of a large animal veterinarian. There will be opportunity to improve/develop palpation skills. Students will also be encouraged to participate in sick cow work, dystocias, surgery, calf vaccination etc. The student will also be exposed to general equine practice that will include, lameness, reproduction, and dentistry.
Our current staff consists of two full time doctors and a support staff of six. We currently have facilities for both equine and bovine haul-in with a large animal surgery area, In-house Coggins and Milk lab and equine hospital. The doctors also do ambulatory work on a daily basis for both equine and bovine. Our equipment includes but is not limited to: 3 ultrasound machines, In-house blood machine, Digital X-ray, 3 Power floats, and thermography. It is highly recommended that students that visit our practice apply for an ultrasound loaner program as most of our herd checks are done with ultrasound and we may or may not have an extra for the student to use on their rotation.
The student will be encouraged to ride on calls daily and shadow the veterinarian supervisor. A typical day starts with herd checks around 7am and dairy calls usually conclude around noon. In the afternoon there are usually equine appointments that can either be in the clinic or ambulatory. The clinic hours are 8-5 Monday-Friday and 8 -12 on Saturday. We do our own emergencies, so any after-hours calls the student is not expected to attend but they are certainly welcome to if they wish.
Housing will be provided for the student at no cost. The clinic has a separate private, secured area for the student to stay. The kitchen area is a common area for all staff but the student is welcome to use. The clinic has for the students use: Oven, stove, microwave refrigerator, plates, cookware, linens, washer, dryer, and internet. There are not accommodations for pets at this time since we are a large animal only clinic.
