Lollypop Farm, Humane Society of Greater Rochester, NY

Description of Elective Experience:

In the two-week long externship, you will receive one-on-one supervision and training in spay and neuter.  You may also have the opportunity to perform other soft tissue surgeries, such as mass removals, depending on the cases present in the shelter.  Surgeries are performed daily, mornings and early afternoons.  After surgeries are finished for the day, you will be expected to shadow one of the veterinarians as they see appointments or on shelter rounds.  Seeing these animals will provide you with the opportunity to perform physical exams, in-house diagnostics such as ear and skin cytology, FNA cytology, ophthalmologic exams, etc.   Even if you are not intending on entering the field of shelter medicine, you will be able to see and learn a lot about common conditions in pets that you will also encounter in private practice.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.:

We are an open-admission private animal shelter serving the greater Rochester, NY community and beyond.   In addition to pet adoption, we provide behavior classes and in-home behavior training, spay/neuter services to qualifying low-income individuals, veterinary services to local rescue groups, community outreach and humane education, and law enforcement/cruelty investigation.  We accept a wide variety of animals into our care in addition to cats and dogs, including small mammals/pocket pets, pet birds, reptiles, horses, sheep, goats, waterfowl and chickens, and other farm animals.  Our clinic staff includes 3 veterinarians, 7 licensed veterinary technicians, 5 veterinary assistants, and our clinic manager.  Our veterinary staff mainly provides the care for the companion animals, although from time to time we do help out with the care of animals on the Farm.   You can find more information on our website http://www.lollypop.org.

We have a large surgical suite that includes 5 surgery tables and monitoring equipment(Surgivet)(Cardell).  We have a digital radiography, and basic ultrasound.
