Mayville Animal Clinic, WI

Description of Elective Experience:

We are a mixed animal practice that enjoys having students come and ride around with us.  We start early in the morning with LA calls, typically herd checks and then go into the open call venue.  The afternoons are reserved for team meetings, consulting, rounds here at the clinic, or SA if anyone is interested.  We have been part of the ambulatory service at UW for over 20 years, and our clients are familiar with having students along.  This is a great learning environment because the clients allow the students to actually do something!

Reproduction is still our main focus on the dairies, but we are seeing more consulting, nutrition, public health, and personel management.  We have bull studs as clients, high end registered cattle, goat dairies, and everything between.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.:

We are a 12 veterinary, multi location practice.  We are currently at three locations.  There are 6 LA doctors, mostly dairy, with a little beef/sheep/goats.  We do about 3% Equine also.  Our SA consists of 6 veterinarians in two locations.  We see no SA night emergencies but we still have our fair share of dairy emergencies.  The dairies range from 20 cows to 2000.  We have 3 CVT's on staff, many ultrasounds, digital, two in house labs, and microbiology.  We perform lots of consulting and still have lots of DA's to cut daily.  It really is a nice assortment of dairy, and same goes for our SA.  Each of our doctors are encouraged to have some expertise, and we frequently have rounds, team meetings, and staff meetings to improve communication.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?:

Student responsibilities, first and foremost, enjoy your time here and learn as much as possible.  Be proactive on farm or in the exam room, displaying confidence to the veterinarians and the clients alike. Ask lots of questions to each doctor as everyone's answer may be different.  We don't tell our practitioners how to practice.  Probably close to 40 hours per week, plus being on call as much as possible as the students are here to learn.  Monday thru Saturday.  Sundays are optional.  We are looking for students that are happy, excited about their career choice and willing to learn.

Student Housing (include costs, amenities, pet friendly, contact info if different from elective contact info):

We provide a room in the clinic that the student can stay for the duration.  A private space with a kitchenette.  We provide all of the food for the students while they are here and have laundry on site.
