Description of Elective Experience: 

Student will be immersed in busy, full service private hospital providing general care to pet dogs, cats, rabbits and the occasional other small mammal.

Schedule will consist of seeing patients on an outpatient basis with a small population of patients requiring in hospital treatment over several days. Although emergencies of practice's existing clients are seen during working hours, we do not provide after hours emergency care. Hours are 8 am to 6 pm Monday through Friday.

Surgeries are performed several days a week and include all typical elective procedures and dentals. Other surgeries regularly scheduled include gastropexies, lateral suture repair of cruciate ligament ruptures and rabbit spays and neuters.

Student will be shown how the staff interacts and how the flow of care is creates in order to have patients well and sick care met.

Student will be involved in seeing patients and helping to determine care under the supervision of Dr. Scibetta and associates. The weekly schedule will mirror that of a typical associate along with a typical caseload. Most days will consist of seeing a combination of well and sick out patient visits with time each week to work on special diagnostics (ultrasounds) and one full surgery day.

 

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.: 

Fully functioning general small animal private hospital in architecturally designed facility. Fully staffed with both veterinary assistants and certified veterinary technicians. Equipped with building wide oxygen system for use with anesthesia and for oxygenation of critical patients. Separate cat and dog wards. Dental space with dental radiography and newly updated IM3 dental unit. Digital radiography with access to VetRad for specialist review of images. Mindray Cuattro ultrasound machine with high frequency probe suitable for small animal patients with access to Idexx for interpretation of images. ECG, blood pressure machines on site and used frequently. Separate surgical suite with strict adherence to AAHA standards for surgery. Radiosurgical unit 4.0 MHz. Ophthamoscope and Otoscope in each examination room. Electronic medical records system used. In house full laboratory as well as outside reference laboratory (Idexx)

Access to numerous updated textbooks for internal medicine and surgical technical techniques. Subscription to VIN and other online resources.

Referral centers in tri state area are utilized and serve as support when needed.

Dr. Scibetta will be certified in SA abdominal ultrasound techniques by June of 2022.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?: 

Student will shadow Dr. Scibetta 4 days during the week and another associate for one half-day.  For the first week, student will be more observational with doctors, and mainly shadow; Weeks 2 and 3, however, student will perform initial examinations, assessments and planning of care for most of the  patients assigned to Dr. Scibetta. All work will be discussed and critiqued in real time during working hours, but student will be responsible for researching information on unusual symptoms, diagnoses and medications/treatment plans after hours when needed. Student will have an opportunity to learn some basic abdominal ultrasound, aFAST, and tFAST techniques. Student will also assist in surgery one day weekly. This will include dosing patient pre-medications and anesthetic agents, aseptic site prep, knowledge of the surgical techniques and determining appropriate post op medications.
