McKillop Poultry Medicine, MD

Description of Elective Experience: 

Students will have hands on experience working with mostly backyard poultry flocks and some commercial egg production flocks. Students will learn about and perform diagnostic testing, necropsy, fecals, disease diagnosis, and treatment (including minor surgery).  Time not spent on farms will be spent going over diseases (clinical signs, diagnosis, treatment and prevention)  and coming up with differential diagnosis for each.  Student may also spend time with the diagnostic laboratory if desired/upon availability. 

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.: 

Dr. McKillop is the sole practitioner. Her practice is mobile.  Avian and poultry library/literature are available at student's disposal.  

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?: 

40 hrs/week (completed during week days). Students will work with Dr. McKillop to create diagnostic and treatment plans.

Student Housing (include costs, amenities, pet friendly, contact info if different from elective contact info): 

Student will have their own room and bathroom in Dr. McKillops home. Student can use the washer and dryer. Food during the week will also be covered.  If we are home during the weekend, student can stay during the weekend.  Please bring your own transportation for use outside of rotation hours. We have 3 cats and an infant in the house- please do not bring your own pets.  Please bring scrubs and/or coveralls that will fit over your clothes. We do have larger scrubs sizes(xl-2xl). We will provide the rest of personal protective equipment (hairnets, gloves, disposable plastic booties). Please let us know your glove size and if you want a face mask (when working in commercial flocks) so we can order them.
