Expose 3rd and 4th year students to programs associated with a large humane society, including veterinary practice (surgery, medicine, and population health), cruelty investigation, animal behavior and modification, and shelter/adoption programs. Students must be attending schools that the Michigan Humane Society has established a specific arrangement/relationship with. Third year students are accepted as long as their clinical rotations have started.
Students work alongside our Veterinarians at our veterinary clinics and shelters, our Cruelty Investigation Department staff, and our animal behaviorist.
MHS offers experience in veterinary medicine (including preventative healthcare) and surgical experience (including sterilizations). In addition, externs experience our Shelter Medicine Program where they are exposed to medical issues facing a large shelter environment, such as preventative health and rehabilitation programs, infectious disease issues, and population health dynamics. They spend time with our Cruelty Investigation Department to gain understanding of animal cruelty recognition, causes, effects, and prosecution. Finally, externs work with our animal behaviorist to learn training and behavioral modification techniques.
