Description of Elective Experience:

The Advanced Equine Reproduction elective at Mississippi State University CVM is a 4 week long experience.  Students will help with and follow clinical cases in the hospital.  This includes mare breeding management, problem mare, behavior issues, stallion collection, semen processing for cooled shipment and cryopreservation.  Students will have opportunities daily to perform rectal exams on mares as well as use ultrasound to stage cycle for management.  Students will be able to perform transcervical inseminations of cooled and fresh semen.  Students will be exposed to frozen semen breeding and assisted reproductive techniques.  Students will have opportunities to perform diagnostics such as uterine biopsies, culture, and cytology.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.:

MSU CVM has three Theriogenology faculty and one technician that provide service to equine, bovine, and companion animal clientele.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?:

Students are expected to manage patient care and medical records, feeding management, and therapeutic administration with guidance and supervision from clinical faculty.  With the seasonality of work related to equine breeding management, some days may require an earlier and later presence than the typical 8AM-5PM day.  Weekends routinely require clinical work as well.  Students are not required to be present for all clinical work on the weekend, but must coordinate with another student to care for their patient.
