Montgomery Animal Hospital, OH

Description of Elective Experience:

Our mission at Montgomery Animal Hospital is to train and inspire the next generation of veterinary professionals. We know that the right team makes any stressful job easier, and our team is the best! We offer you real-world practical experience in our private AAHA-accredited small animal and exotic Cincinnati practice to prepare you to hit the ground running for your first associate position.

The experience will include: outpatient appointments ranging from wellness care to sick visits, occasional urgent care experience, dentistry, and general soft tissue surgery. You will shadow our experienced doctors and have the chance for hands-on patient treatment and the chance to lead client communication. The majority of our patients are dogs and cats, so you can seek out or avoid the birds, reptiles, and small mammals depending on your preference.

Our clientele is relatively affluent, which allows us to run most of the diagnostics we need to provide care for their pets. We also take a practical approach to our patient care, so our clients know that they can trust our recommendations for further workup to be completely necessary. We work closely with the local specialists to get our patients the best possible outcome. We love to teach, so we host tech students regularly during the school year and hire vet students for summer positions.

Mentorship in the business aspects of running a vet hospital available if desired.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.:

We have experienced support staff to provide awesome client service and patient care. Our RVTs, vet assistants, and client service representatives all work together.

Our hospital is equipped with in-house Idexx lab equipment, digital whole-body and dental radiology, ultrasound, Class IV laser therapy, and all the usual tools. We use Cornerstone for medical records.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?:

36-40 hours per week. Schedule can be M-F (flexible hours between 8-6) or may include Saturday hours (8-2) depending on your availability.

You will shadow the veterinarians and RVTs, and help with patient care to get hands-on experience. We have a team approach to running the hospital. Our technicians will provide guidance as needed through hands-on tasks like blood draws, catheters, and intubation (if desired) when patient temperament permits.
