Description of Elective Experience: 

Shelter Medicine and Surgery Externship between 3 facilities in Montgomery County (all operated by the MCSPCA). The main facility is located in Conshohocken. There is a small adoption center in Abington with a limited clinic and another full service shelter located in Perkiomenville. Externs will rotate between all 3 facilities with the primary veterinarian. The Perkiomenville shelter is mostly small animal but also has a barn/pasture on-site housing several permanent residence horses and occasionally takes in large animals/livestock. 

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.: 

Dental units at Conshohocken and Perkiomenville. Ultrasound at Perkiomenville. Radiographs are sent out.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?: 

The students will assist the staff with patient care in the morning. Surgery takes place after vet checks and patient care are completed. Students will shadow surgery and perform surgery with one on one supervision and assistance. Students proficient in surgery will receive some training in HQHVSN techniques. Generally, afternoons will consist of remaining surgeries, case management, herd medicine, and daily exams/treatments. When in Conshohocken, the student will drive or ride with the veterinarian to the Abington location in the afternoon for checkups and exams 2-3 days per week. Two days of the week will be in Perkiomenville with the same general routine outlined above.

Hours are generally 8am-4pm Monday-Friday.
