Montreal SPCA, Canada

Description of Elective Experience:

We have a large animal shelter, we do a lot of spay neuter for community cats and for cats and dogs of people with low income. We do a lot of dentistry. We are able to provide a lot of care for shelter animals. One of our veterinarians has done a fellowship in shelter medicine and we thrive to adopt the current best practices in shelter medicine. The student will be exposed to all of these things and will have plenty of opportunity to practice surgery.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.:

We have a team of 7 full and part time vets and over 20 animal health technicians plus a lot of shelter staff. We have an ultrasound machine, x rays, dental x rays, access to a lab.

We do continuous in both in shelter medicine and veterinary medicine overall. We take several students for externships every year.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?:

The student is expected to participate by doing exams and helping make up treatment plans. The student also will be doing several surgeries (cat neuters and spays, and often also dog neuters and spays, sometimes they can participate in dentals depending on their skill). The level of supervision depends on the student's abilities and confidence.
