The externship program is for students currently enrolled at a veterinary school. The purpose of this two-week program is to gain real-world experience in veterinary medicine, and to see how a large private practice functions. Some of the goals of the program is to work on: history taking, develop/improve physical examination technique, interpretation of diagnostics, creation of problem and differential diagnoses lists, treatment plan creation, anesthesia plan creation, sterile technique, cost of care, and quality of life discussions/euthanasia. This experience provides one-on-one instruction.
Students will mostly be shadowing and will discuss case management and options with a clinician. They will be able to obtain a history with the technician assigned to the case. They will be able to perform full physical exams, diagnostic test sampling, and other technical skills without the owner present (in the ward, prior to a surgical procedure, inpatients, ER cases). Students will be able to perform a limited examination in the room (important PE findings) with the owner depending on the clinician's preference. They will be present for most client discussions and are not expected to discuss case management directly with clients. Students will go to rounds with inpatient clinician and attend any service didactic or journal club rounds, if available during their rotation. For procedures, students will be able to scrub in and assist the surgeon.
We have a 3-bedroom townhouse located 1 mile from the hospital that includes a private upstairs bedroom, full kitchen, large living area (newly furnished), laundry room, TVs in each bedroom, TV in living room, free wifi, a workspace on the first floor and a back yard. Pets are not permitted. Cost of the master bedroom with its own private bathroom is $300/week and either of the other 2 bedrooms are $250/week.
