Mountainview Animal Hospital, NY

Description of Elective Experience:

Our facility offers a full range of medical exams, from routine yearly physicals/vaccines, tonometry procedures, pain management, minor dermotology to comprehenisve exams for medically necesary treatments.  Could be minor eye infection diagnosis to bloodwork to diagnose organ failure. We also do a large amount of different surgical procedures from basic spay/neuters to ACL repair, amputations to the occasional cesarean section, enucleation, mass removals, splenectomies.  We see mostly cats/dogs but an occasional pocket pet will come in.  We may see a small handfull of equine/goats/farm.  We are a very busy small practice.  We believe students will receive everything they need for their career and then some.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.:

Our facility is equipted with a full in-house lab of both Idexx and Abaxis chem/cbc analyzers, full line of Idexx snap test products, surgical suite with ventilator, vitals monitor, ECG, dental area/wet table, surgical laser, new digital x-ray unit and plans of upgraded ultrasound this year.  Full in-house pharmacy, prescription diets and the most post popular heartworm preventatives as well as flea/tick.  We currently have two full time doctors and one part time, one licensed vet tech and four support staff members who are all crosstrained with both office experience and veterinary assisting.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?:

We are flexible to work with students as to what is best with their schedule/hours depending on their travel time to get to us.  We are open 6 days/wk, 8:30-5 M-F and 9-1 Sat.  We like students to get right in and work with the doctors, techs and support staff and get as involved as they are comfortable to do so.  We believe it will give them a good hands on as to what to expect on a day to day basis in a busy facility.  If students have a curriculum for their externship we will do our best to cover everything they need.
