Mozzachio Mobile Veterinary Services, NC

Description of Elective Experience:

To learn as much as possible related to the veterinary care of pet pigs - for which there are very few options! Including but not limited to: handling & restraint, behavior, nutrition, basic maintenance care (physical exam, hoof trim, tusk trim, vaccinations, blood collection), +/- surgery such as castration or spay if available.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.:

Mozzachio Mobile Veterinary Services is a 1-doctor practice. A veterinary assistant may or may not accompany the group on house call visits. Equipment includes all that is necessary to handle/treat pet pigs - Panepinto pig sling, portable isoflurane machine, hoof/tusk trimming equipment. The practice is unique and one-of-a-kind. There are also Powerpoint presentations for the student to review to become familiar wtih pet pig medicine.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?:

The student will be performing hands-on pet pig veterinary care under the supervision of Dr. Mozzachio; some travel is involved as the mobile practice serves several states. Working days vary but typically include weekend days when more owners are available for house call visits. Hours/week vary as well but usually no more than 40/week.

Student Housing (include costs, amenities, pet friendly, contact info if different from elective contact info):

Housing is available free of charge and consists of a private room in a house at a given location (which varies depending on state visited); all amenities including full bath and kitchen are included. Some accommodations are pet-friendly though arrangements must be made beforehand due to the amount of travel that may require petsitting services while pet remains at one location.
