Description of Elective Experience: 

The purpose of our externship is to provide students (from all levels of experience) with the ability to closely work with our veterinarians and technicians during in-hospital, out-patient, and ambulatory cases. Our hands-on and educational approach allows veterinary medicine and technician students (along with all others) to develop their knowledge base of equine veterinary medicine, advance their technical skills, and/or simply strengthen their choice of a career path.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.: 

Myhre Equine Clinic has an equine board-certified surgeon, consulting internist, an associate veterinarians, and two intern veterinarians, and three veterinary technicians on staff. We provide one surgical suite with two well-padded induction/recovery stalls, treatment room with advanced diagnostic and therapeutic equipment (e.g., diagnostic and therapeutic ultrasound, Game Ready, shock wave, endoscopy, needle-scope, etc.), radiology, nuclear scintigraphy, MRI, CT scanner, in-house laboratory with PRP/IRAP equipment, pharmacy (in-house and online), 20+ in- and out-patient stalls, and two colic stalls, a mare and neonatal unit, and three isolation stalls, all with video monitoring capability.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?: 

Externs are expected to assist interns and technicians with the daily treatments of in-patients and assist primary clinicians with out-patient and lameness cases, surgical cases, and advanced imaging of patients. They are supervised day-long. Our hours of operation are Monday thru Friday, 8AM - 5PM. We are open 24/7 for emergencies and in-patient treatments.

Student Housing (include costs, amenities, pet friendly, contact info if different from elective contact info): 

On-site housing is free-of-charge, but students are expected to assist with after-hours in-patient treatments and any emergencies that occur, in turn. Utensils and linens are provided for living. Students are expected to bring / purchase their own food and drink. Pets are not allowed during externships.
