The Abigail Wexner Research Institute at Nationwide Children's Hospital (NCH) is a nationally recognized children's hospital with a moderately sized AAALAC and USDA-accredited Laboratory Animal Research Program. NCH has two animal facilities on main campus which contain a Small Animal Imaging Facility and Behavioral Core, a nonhuman primate (NHP) housing facility, conventional and barrier rodent facilities, small animal surgical and procedural spaces, zebrafish program, biosafety level -2 areas, and large animal housing and surgical space. Our program offers internships and externships for veterinary technicians, veterinary students and laboratory animal veterinary residents. These educational opportunities allow students to gain hands-on experience with laboratory animals such as mice, rats, chinchillas, zebrafish, goats, sheep, and NHP’s.
See above description
Work hours are dependent upon the required clinical support and research requirements during the scheduled externship. A typical day would be 8-5 M-F. However, students are expected to assist ARC staff members outside of normal business hours to provide clinical and research support if needed. Supervision would be provided in all of the above mentioned scenarios.
