The extern will assist the wildlife health team and will have opportunities to help out field biologists. There is a large variation in the day to day activities which may include but are not limited to: assisting with wildlife captures or chemical immobilizations, assistance with necropsies, sample management, preparation for capture activities, CWD sampling, WNS surveillance assistance, data entry, data analysis, and helping with public outreach.
1 Wildlife Veterinarian, 1 Wildlife Health Biologist, 1 Technician. The game division has 15 field biologists and 7 staff specialists. The Nevada Department of Wildlife is responsible for all management of wildlife in the state.
Hours and days can vary greatly. A normal workweek is 40 hours, M-F. However if we are doing captures during that time weekends and additional hours will be required. The student will mainly shadow but we will give them tasks from basic data entry and capture kit prep to taking vitals, etc to additional tasks depending on the abilities of the student.
