The veterinary student will gain experience in the daily life of a small animal general practice veterinarian. The student will shadow and have opportunities to take the role of the veterinarian under the direct supervision of a licensed veterinarian. The student's role can include receiving histories from clients and performing general physical exams. With the attending clinician, they will formulate problem lists and diagnostic plans, and based on the results, they will formulate a treatment protocol. The student will be performing and reading diagnostic tests with a veterinarian. The student under the supervision of a veterinarian can observe and assist in surgical procedures like spays, neuters, foreign body removals, mass removals, etc.
Our office currently has digital radiographs, ultrasound, blood and urinalysis machines, surgical suite, cold laser therapy, microscope for cytology and other diagnostic tests, standard anesthetic monitoring equpitment, dental radiograph capability, fully stocked pharmacy, numerous veterinary textbooks for reference, and digital software for record keeping. Staff currently includes 3 veterinarians 2 licenced technicians, 1 LVT student as well as numerous cross trained veterinary assistants and CSRs.
The student will be expected to complete 40 hours per week. The student will work 4 days per week to achieve these 40 hours which will include only weekdays. The first week will involve mostly shadowing appointments and surgery as well as practicing some hands on technical procedures such as drawing blood, performing cystocentesis, obtaining needle aspirates, and reading cytologies. In the second week, the student can expect to take on the role of the veterinarian leading routine wellness and sick appointments and coming up with diagnostic and treatment plans with direct supervision and direction by the attending clinician.
