Newberry Animal Emergency Center, PA

Description of Elective Experience:

We are a privately-owned emergency facility located in a beautiful small town in Pennsylvania. Our location is ideal if you enjoy city life and a quiet county life, as we are just 20 minutes from Harrisburg and York and 2 hours from Baltimore or Philadelphia, best of both worlds. We are a relatively new five-doctor emergency practice dedicated to providing compassionate and progressive care in a relaxed work environment.

Our mission is to offer the highest level of care while administering it in as close to a fear-free environment as possible. We provide an upbeat and enjoyable work environment for our staff which contributes to the patients having a better chance at a pleasant experience as well. Everything we do is patient-focused which has resulted in many happy clients also.

Although, we are primarily a small animal practice some of our doctors will also see exotics and birds, so you will have plenty of opportunities to try many different specialties. We also offer a two doctor day practice just minutes away from the ER, to further your education and experiences.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.:

We focus on emergency care, in house diagnostics, hospitalization, excellent medical and surgical services, along with client education. Veterinary students are supported by our highly trained and friendly staff within our stand-alone building. Our staff have access to new in-house IDEXX blood machines, u/a analyzers, digital x-ray, ultrasound, laser and much much more.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?:

Students under a veterinarian's supervision will be taking primary responsibility on cases deemed appropriate. The student will participate in hands on exams, treatments, assisting in surgeries, developing diagnostics plans and running diagnostics, and in and out-patient care. Students will also be expected to chart all medical notes, communications etc.

Students will be required to work three to four, ten to twelve hour shifts, overnight or day time, whichever suits them better.
