NIVES - Northeast Indiana Veterinary Emergency and Specialty Hospital, IN

Description of Elective Experience:

All students will have the opportunity to work with multiple different specialty departments during their time at NIVES which include: surgery, internal medicine, cardiology and emergency/critical care.  If a particular student wants to concentrate on any one or two specialites they will have the ability to voice that preference.  All students would have access to experiencing working in a small animal physical rehabilitation practice which is part of the NIVES hospital but located in the primary care facility next door.

We are known to be a teaching hospital and welcome externships, internships and often can offer a job as an emergency doctor after graduation.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.:

We have 10 veterinarians that include - 1 boarded internist, 1 boarded cardiologist, 2 boarded surgeons and 6 ER doctors.  We have 85 support staff members including RVTs, veterinary assistants, reception, and kennel attendants.

NIVES has the capability for digital radiology, CT, ultrasound, endoscopy, extensive surgery and a fully equipt ICU for advanced critical care needs.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?:

Schedules are flexible and can be negotiated to a degree when a student is interviewing for an externship or internship.  Typically we ask for 3-4 days per week and 1 weekend day (Saturday or Sunday).  The weekend day is a toltally different learning/working experience compaired to during the day during the week.

We typically like to see our students work 10-12 hour days, 4-5 days per week.

Depending on the length of time a student would spend at our facility,  they would start out shadowing but if they were confident, interested and our supervising veterinarian felt comfortable, they would be allowed to have some hands-on experiences.

Student Housing (include costs, amenities, pet friendly, contact info if different from elective contact info):

NIVES has 2 apartments in our facility that are located upstairs (above the animal hospital).  The apartment has a bed, closet and dresser for clothing, TV, and computer that is connected to the internet and hospital server.  The apartments have updated decor, are carpeted and have a window.  There is a bathroom with a shower that would be shared if there happened to be more than one student at NIVES at a time.  There is also a large, fully equipt kitchen available.  It is located in the break room and may be shared with the staff.  Our apartment is pet friendly.  There is no charge to stay in our apartments.  There is a grocery store and restaurants available within walking distance.  Students are encouraged to participate in hospital operations during all three shifts to get a well rounded experience of a 24/7/365 facility.
