This externship will allow the student to experience a busy small animal housecall practice. The extern will accompany us on housecalls at clients' homes to learn the unique interaction with both clients and patients. Our handling techniques have to be adaptable to the home setting. There will also be some insight into how we schedule visits and the management of a small-scale business model. All the same general practice principles apply to the medicine but in a more intimate setting for both the client and the patient.
The extern will be accompanying the Veterinarian/Practice owner as well as a licensed technician on calls and assisting as is appropriate.
We see housecalls 3 days a week and the extern will accompany us on all appointments over the 2 weeks. The extern will primarily be shadowing but will also have opportunities to restrain, prepare for appointments, and prepare lab specimens.
