North Buffalo Animal Hospital, NY

Description of Elective Experience:

We are the newest hospital in a well established group of clinics in Buffalo NY. This includes our clinic, North Buffalo Animal Hospital, as well as Ellicott Street Animal Hospital and West Side Pet Clinic, the first and only low cost clinic in WNY. We currently have 2 full time DVMs that consider us their home base, and 3 rotating doctors shared between the clinics. We are a general practice seeing dogs and cats, providing preventative care and well as diagnostic visits, dentistry and surgery (including orthopedics!). We currently see appts 5 days a week, and have surgery on Wednesdays and Thursdays, but hope to be up to 4 surgery days by next year. Students will spend time with DVMs with varying experience and interests, participating in general exams, treatment planning and execution, and surgery, as well as experience running lab work with our LVTs.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.:

We are lucky to have a large, footprint with room to grow, including 4 exam rooms, an isolation ward, 2 surgical suites and a very large treatment area. We are equipped with a modern x-ray, ultrasound, separate dental table and station w/x-ray, cold therapy laser, electrocautery, full in house laboratory and more. Our lead technician has over 20 years of LVT experience, including many years teaching technicians at our local University.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?:

We are currently open Monday 8-5, Tuesday 8-5, Wednesday 8-6, Thursday 8-8, Friday 8-6 and rotating Saturdays. Students could be shadowing during any of these shifts, depending on their supervising DVMs schedule. Students will typically start the week shadowing in GP appts, participating in case discussions, and developing treatments plans alongside the DVM. As the week goes on the student may be responsible for performing their own exams, running lab work (potentially blood, urine, ear and skin smears, snap tests) and assist in surgery, radiographs and ultrasounds, as student and supervising DVM comfort/caseload allows.
