Description of Elective Experience: 

Experience is tailored to individual student goals (which we ask for prior to externship period).  Students are allowed to choose cases during the day which appeal to them and hands-on participation is encouraged.  Depending on the case load, students have the opportunity to practice day one skills including (but not limited to): feedlot processing, castration, pregnancy diagnosis, chute operation, physical exam, field necropsy, diagnostic sample collection and interpretation, foot work, dystocia, client communication, ect on the large animal side.  Small animal work consists of attending appointments with a DVM, participating in sick animal work ups and surgical cases. 

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.: 

8 doctor (2 small animal, 2 mixed, and 4 large animal DVMs), 2 location mixed animal clinic.  Clinic amenities include: digital radiology, in-house blood machines, ultrasound, and ultrasonic dental machine with drill.  Large animal amenities include:  covered haul-in facilities, multiple portable ultrasound units, hydraulic chutes (both in house and portable), and hydraulic roll over chutes.   Small animal: routine wellness, sick animal, and surgery.  Large animal work is seasonally dependent:  feedlot, cow/calf, advanced reproduction (ultrasound to determine pregnancy as well as age and sex of fetus, breeding soundness exams, embryo transfer), dairy, small ruminant, sick work, foot work, surgery.  

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?: 

Generally work hours are 7:30- 5 PM Monday-Friday and 7:30-noon on Saturdays.  Sometimes jobs may start earlier or end later.  Students have the option of participating in after hours emergencies.  We encourage hands-on participation under the direct guidance of a DVM. 

Student Housing (include costs, amenities, pet friendly, contact info if different from elective contact info): 

Student housing is generally available at no cost with a DVM, no pets.  We will communicate directly with each student in order to give contact info prior to externship.
