Description of Elective Experience: 

Small animal (canine and feline) general practice experience including wellness/preventative care, illness/injury workup and treatment, soft tissue surgery, and dentistry.  Practice has two office locations in north central Ohio (student externs rotate between the two clinics during the elective).   

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.: 

Four-doctor practice with a well-trained staff including five registered veterinary technicians.  Equipped with in-house laboratory, digital radiography, digital dental radiography, ultrasound, and therapeutic laser. 

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?: 

Approximately 40 hours per week (Monday through Friday, 9am-5pm), with optional Saturday morning hours (9am-12pm).  Elective consists of shadowing DVMs with opportunities to perform physical examinations and minor procedures, interpret and discuss labwork and radiographs, assist in surgery and possibly perform routine spays and neuters (surgical experience not guaranteed -- dependent upon case availability and client willingness to allow students to perform surgery on pets).
