Description of Elective Experience: 

Students will obtain real clinical experience during their 2 week externship. They will be shadowing the doctors in the exam rooms and performing physical exams. They will interpret diagnostic blood work and develop treatment plans with the doctors on duty.  Students will be assisting in dental and surgical procedures under doctor superision. Students will refine their skills in jugular blood draws and placement of IV catheters. 

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.: 

We have a pharmacy, digital x-ray, endoscopy, laser, in house labwork. Two doctor practice staffed with veterinary technicians, veterinary assistants, and receptionist. We have a plethora of books for reference on site as well as membership to VIN.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?: 

Typcially we expect the students to be present Monday-Friday, for a minimum of 40 hours. Students start out by shadowing and observing, and then become more active participants as time goes on. Activities include collecting patient hisotires, phyiscal examination of patients, participation in planning and executing diagnostic and treatment plans, inpatient monitoring, assisting in surgery, interpretation of radiographic images and cytology spencimesn, and practicing clinical techniques.
