NorthStar Veterinary Emergency, Trauma & Specialty Center, NJ

Description of Elective Experience: 

The student will work alongside our specialists during cageside patient rounds, patient SOAPs, consults/recheck exams, and surgical procedures 

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.: 

Our Surgery Deptartment performs minimally invasive surgeries including Arthroscopy, laparoscopy, thoracoscopy as well as specialty procedures including Neurologic procedures, oncologic procedures, orthopedic, reconstructive, soft tissue, sports medicine and thoracic/cardiac. We also use fluoroscopy, interventional radiology and C-arm assisted surgeries. We have 5 board certified surgeons on staff along with 3 residency trained surgeons.

Our externs are exposed to various types of procedures, consults, and post surgical rechecks. we have state of the art imaging including, CT scanning and angiograms, ultrasound, MR imaging and digital radiography

We have a full library available along with internet access and up to date plumbs veterinary drug manual. 

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?: 

The student is expected to work 40 hours a week. a schedule of 4 ten hour shifts, or 5 eight hour shifts will be provided, days of the week vary as we provide surgery to our patients 7 days a week.
