Description of Elective Experience: 

The student will be riding along with the five full time bovine vets in our practice. During this time he/she will have the opportunity to interact with dairy clients and dairy animals. We do all range of preventative herd health, including pregnancy diagnosis, dehorning calves, surgical castrations. In addition, the student will have the chance to participate in emergency work which can include dystocia, lacerated milk veins and down cow examinations. The student will be asked to do complete physical exams on sick animals and create treatment plans. When possible, we will involve the student in the more cerebral aspect of bovine production medicine, including vaccine protocol development and reproductive efficiency data analysis. 

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.: 

There are five full time bovine practitioners in our practice and the student will interact with all of them. We have an in house masitis lab and blood chemistry analyzer. We have 5 rectal ultrasounds for pregnancy diagnosis. The practice has been accepting and teaching veterinary students for over 20 years.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?: 

The student will be expected to arrive at the clinic at 7:30 Monday through Friday and will work with the vet he/she is assigned to until the work is done for the day. This could be 5-6 hours or 10 as the work demands. On call and weekend duties are optional and will be worked out with the student as his/her schedule and interest allows. The student will always be in the presence of one of our doctors while shadowing.
