Norwalk Animal Hospital / Sound Paws Canine Physical Rehabilitation, CT

Description of Elective Experience: 

The student will observe and assist with physical rehabilitation cases. They will also have the opportunity to participate in routine and advanced dentistry, and shadow doctors in the exam room and surgery suite. 

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.: 

We are a busy, AAHA accredited two doctor general practice with a specialty rehabilitation referral service. As such, we have a fully equipped rehab facility, including therapeutic laser and underwater treadmill. 

Our general practice utilizes digital radiography, diagnostic ultrasound and in-house laboratory. We have a high speed dental unit and digital dental radiography. Our surgery suite includes a CO2 laser and radio surgery unit. 

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?: 

Students would be expected to work 30-40 hrs per week, Monday through Saturday. The student's primary role will be to assist the rehabilitation therapist and certified assistants with patient treatments, discussing diagnosis and treatment rationale. When available, other time will be spent observing/assisting with dental and surgical procedures. Lastly, time may be spent shadowing/assisting doctors in exam rooms, with an opportunity to practice exams and acquiring patient history.
