Offshore Animal Hospital of Nantucket, MA

Description of Elective Experience:

Small animal predominant practice seeing dogs and cats primarily with some exotic, wildlife and small ruminant cases.

Cases are anywhere from general medicine, surgery and dental to urgent care and emergency. The practice is the only hospital on an island so we have to deal with all kinds of cases, many requiring extensive stabilization prior to transfer or no transfer at all and intensive care depending on ability to travel.

Externs will be shadowing in appointments, in urgent care/ER or in surgery. They will be expected to help restrain or obtain samples if needed and take part in morning rounds.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.:

5-6 veterinarians, 2 certified technicians, assistants.

Not sure what equipment resources means (manuals? Training courses?)

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?:

They will be expected to be here for at least the hours expected for their externship but have generally been about 34-36 hours a week (5 days a week M-F). They will mostly be shadowing but will be asked to help restrain to obtain samples or process samples and some minor cleaning. We will also help student reach goals in gaining technical skills as needed and wanted.
