Ohio Pet Vet

Description of Elective Experience:

We have multiple hospitals in different locations to choose from.   The areas of location are Akron, Warren, Youngstown, Solon, and Brunswick.   Our doctors have special interests in dentistry, surgery, internal medicine, oncology and exotics.  Dr Grguric has worked with the OVMA and the AzVMA (Arizona Veterinary Medical Association) to develop mentorship programs and focus groups for new graduates.  We are working to develop programs that will help veterinary students to learn more and obtain more experience.  The student will work closely with one of our 16 doctors where they will be involved in case studies and surgeries.  They will also be exposed to orthopedics that include TTA surgeries, fracture repairs, cruciate surgery, MPL surgery and pelvic surgical repairs.  For dentistry they will be able to see root canals and extensive dental procedures.  Patients are hospitalized and the students will be exposed to morning rounds and treatment programs.  The student will be able to do some minor surgeries under the guidance of a lead doctor and the student will be able to see clients and patients in an exam room setting.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.:

Ohio Pet Vet has mutliple locations with hospitals that have state of the art equipment.   Every hospital is equiped with surgical lasers, fluid pumps, cardell units, masimo pulse ox, therapy lasers, ultrasound, doppler EKG and digital x ray and high speed dental drills.   One of the hospitals has endoscopy and advanced ultrasound availability and a CT scanner has been ordered.    We have outstanding staffs at each location that are a mixture of assistants and registered technicians.  There are about 16 doctors that work with Ohio Pet Vet that all have special interests that the student can benefit from.  These interests are surgery, internal medicine, dentistry, ultrasound/radiology, exotics and oncology.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?:

The student will be expected to be shadowing as much as possible.  This can be a 40 hour work week or it can drop lower if that is what the program requires.  We will accomodate whatever The Ohio State University would like to do.  The student will work directly with a doctor.  They will be able to do minor surgeries, see patients, and perform diagnostics and treatment plans.  These will be reviewed with a doctor on staff

Student Housing (include costs, amenities, pet friendly, contact info if different from elective contact info):

We currently do not have any housing available; however, if the program becomes prominent and grows we will be more than happy to look into it.

We also have an ER clinic in Flint Michigan that we may consider opening up to students.   This is a very busy 24 hour facility which is AAHA certified which sees a high case load and it would be an excellent learning facility.
