Description of Elective Experience: 

Students who are chosen to participate in an elective block at our practice will be exposed to a high quality small animal practice in a rural, island setting.  Senior veterinary students will have the opportunity to work up clinical cases and work with veterinarians to discuss the options for therapy.  If patients are available, supervised spay and neuters of cats from the local shelter can be performed by the student.  The student will have the support of staff veterinarians for case work up, discussion of current topics in the profession and professional development.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.: 

Our 2 1/2  doctor practice is equipped with in house CBC and Serum Chemistry machines, digital radiology and ultrasound.  Surgery is limited to general soft tissue surgery and basic orthopedic procedures. There are 5 full time support staff that help run our hospital.  We have a basic veterinary library and have online access to the Veterinary Information Network.  For difficult cases, our clinic utilizes board certified surgeons, opthamologists and radiologists.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?: 

The student is expected to be present in the office between 35 and 40 hours per week.  The student should also be available for the occational after hours emergency call.  The normal work hours would be 7:30 am to 4:30 pm.  Student responsibilities would be a combination of shadowing, support and independent/supervised case work up.
