Externs rotate through medicine, ambulatory, and surgery. They assist technicians in setting up for admission of emergencies and patient care, as well as directly observe and participate in diagnostic and therapeutic procedures performed by veterinarians. Externs are called in for emergencies, and are expected to participate in morning and evening rounds. Externs are placed at one of two of our full service hospital locations, in the heart of the Bluegrass and have the opportunity to shadow up to twelve veterinarians. Caseload includes neonatal foal critical care, dystocia deliveries, cesarean deliveries, reproductive services, dentistry, podiatry, colics (medical and surgical), infectious diseases, elective procedures, general and preventative medicine, anesthesia, in-hospital critical care, prepurchase exams, lameness examinations, among many others.

Externs are expected to participate in morning and evening rounds (7am and 7pm). Externs are encouraged to be available for emergencies, nights and weekends, to experience the full capacity of our hospital and services.
Externs are expected to assist with patient care, alongside both veterinarians and veterinary technicians. This includes everything from stall cleanliness, set up for and clean up after emergency admissions, set up for and clean up after surgeries, patient treatments (when supervised), general helpfulness and tidiness. Externs are expected to come with a good attitude for learning, good horsemanship, and basic veterinary technical skills. On a case-by-case basis, veterinarians will determine the comfort level of externs before asking them to do anything of a higher skill level.
Usually externs have their own rooms, but may be asked to share with one other extern. Housing is provided on-site with shared full kitchen, lounge with TV, clinic library, and full bathroom available at each hospital location. No pets allowed.
