Description of Elective Experience: 

Come experience daily life in a privately owned general practice with an experienced small animal team. Students will be immersed in case management, client communication, discussion of a spectrum of care approach to cases, dental, and surgical procedures. You will leave this externship with an understanding of daily life in general practice, how to navigate common client communication challenges, and an appreciation for the role of the veterinary team. Your externship will be led by Dr. Kate Boatright, a veterinarian with years of small animal GP and ER experience who has mentored numerous students and new graduate veterinarians. As the author of the Veterinary Mentorship Manual, regular contributor to veterinary publications, and speaker at veterinary schools and conferences around the U.S, Dr. Boatright enjoys teaching and facilitating learning in the clinic. 

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.: 

Staff: 2 on-site DVMs, 1 CVT, 4 experienced support staff, CVPM (works remotely but is available to discuss business topics). 

Equipment: Full surgical suite, dental radiographs, digital radiographs, ultrasound, in-house lab equipment including digital cytology, endoscope

Services: Full service general practice performing preventative care, acute and chronic illness management, same day emergencies are seen schedule-permitting; COHAT and dental extractions; Elective and emergency soft tissue surgery (no orthopedics)

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?: 

The clinic is open Monday through Friday. Hours vary by day, earliest opening is 9 am and latest closing is 7 pm. Longest day in-clinic will be 10 hours. 

Students are expected to come prepared to discuss cases, scrub in to surgery, and communicate with clients. The externship will offer as much hands-on time as possible with some shadowing and observation. We will hold rounds to discuss topics such as technician utilization, client communication challenges, and spectrum of care. Business rounds are available with our CVPM. Students are encouraged to engage in self-directed learning to prepare for next day cases, interpret labwork, and make plans for patients.

Student Housing (include costs, amenities, pet friendly, contact info if different from elective contact info): 

A fully furnished house is available on site (right across the parking lot) for the duration of your stay during the rotation at no cost to you. Meals and travel expenses will be at the student's expense.
