Externs will come to a busy sports medicine, surgery, and reproduction clinic. The extern may choose which doctor they will follow for the day and may rotate through every facet of the clinic. The extern will be able to see many different types of procedures and learn equine medicine in a western performance horse practice.
Performance Equine Associates attempts to be on the cutting edge with its equipment and procedures. The founders upgrade equipment constantly and have the latest in digital radiography, ultrasound, surgical instruments (arthroscopic, laparoscopic, locking plate technology, etc.), and in-house diagnostics (hematology, chemistry, and blood-gas analyzers). Performance Equine also has a reproductive and rehab facility that can also allow students to see several aspects of equine practice. The practice boasts 6 veterinarians (2 boarded surgeons), 16 veterinary assistants (2 registered technicians), one practice manager, and several receptionists.
The students are expected to be on time, presentable in appearance, and prepared. The more one is prepared, the more tasks one will be allowed to perform. Hands on experience varies due to the nature of the clientele and the particular cases. One should expect little hands on experience the first week of the externship. The clinic is open for regular business 6 days a weeks and accepts emergencies 24/7. Externs are expected to assist with treatments, emergencies, and other duties as performing these tasks will allow more hands on experience and learning opportunities.
Student housing is in the form of an onsite apartment that is first come first serve. There is a full kitchen and bathroom available. We ask that you leave your pets at home.
