Description of Elective Experience: 

Student will shadow licensed veterinarian in every aspect of their workday including appointments, internal medicine diagnostics, treatments and surgery.  With guidance and supervision student may be asked to perform minor procedures at clinician's discretion.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.: 

We have three full time veterinarieans on staff, four NYS licensed veterinary technicians, receptionists, kennel attendants and an office manager.  We are situated one hour, 15 min from Cornell University and on hour from Animal Emergency and Specialists office.  There is a community college 15 min away Finger Lakes Community College and a private college Hobart & William Smith College 15 min away.  We have a complete lab including Idexx, CBC/Chem analyzer, digital radiography, ultrasonic dental unit, ultrasound, complete surgical suite, and ICU area with fluid pumps.  

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?: 

Student is expected to perform AM & PM treatments using SOAP format.  While shadowing clinicians during appointments student should develop a routine list of questioning and develop listening skills to establish an accurate history.  She should develop a step wise routine for performing her physician examinations and recording that information on her patients medical records.  She should monitor how clinicians interact with clients to establish friendly relationships that are also epathetic and understanding of different needs and capabilities of each individual to help decide what is right for the client and their pet.  Student should learn to determine which diagnostic tests are most important for solving each issue and be able to evaluate the results to properly discuss treatment options.  In surgery, student will be expected to follow sterial technique while in the surgery suite.  She will be asked to provide extra instruments and supplies duinr advance procedures.  She may be askted to glove in during advanced procedures to assist the surgeion.  Student maybe asked to monitor a patient under anesthesia.  Student will be responsible for recovering all post-operative patients and reporting any issues to her supervisor.  She may be asked to explain post-op instructions to clients.  Student may on ocassion be asked to assist with after hours emergency cases.
