Description of Elective Experience: 

Objective: 

To expose proactive swine veterinary students to a pioneering genetics company with a focus on the role of the swine veterinarian in a high health breeding stock multiplication system.

Program Structure:

  • 2 week schedule combining field experience and office experience in a premier swine genetics company.
  • Potential Training Topics:

    • Overview and principles of a breeding stock company
    • Basics of the PIC genetic improvement platform
    • Overview of the PIC Technical services and Swine Nutrition programs
    • Principles of health, biosecurity, and monitoring of a breeding stock multiplication system
    • Ante and post mortem swine sample collection and interpretation of diagnostic test results
    • Exposure to multiple phases within pig production:

      • Multiplier herds
      • Gene Transfer Centers (Boar Studs)
      • Transport decontamination facilities
      • Harvest Facility
      • Feed mills
Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?: 

Criteria:

  • 3rd year veterinary student in North America (US or CA)
  • Ability to demonstrate their passion to the swine industry, continual learning and excellence
  • The work week is Monday through Friday, with possible weekend work/travel

PIC will cover travel expenses, meals, and lodging during the 2 week externship. No stipend provided.
