Description of Elective Experience: 

PIC Swine Veterinary Externship Program

 

Objective

To expose proactive swine veterinary students to PIC, a pioneering genetics company, with a focus on the role of the swine veterinarian in a high health breeding stock multiplication system.

Program Structure

Two-week schedule combining field experience and office experience in a premier swine genetics company.

 

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.: 

Potential training topics:

  1. PIC Health Principles and Health Assurance Program
  2. PIC Health Operations
  3. PIC Genetic Services
  4. PIC Supply Chain
  5. PIC Health Research
  6. Exposure to PIC Multiplication:
  • Multiplier herds
  • Gene transfer center (GTC, boar stud)
  • Transport decontamination facilities
  • Feed mills
Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?: 

Criteria

1. Third year veterinary student in North America (US or CA)

2. Demonstrates passion for swine industry, continual learning and excellence

Student Housing (include costs, amenities, pet friendly, contact info if different from elective contact info): 

PIC will cover travel expenses, meals, and lodging during the two-week externship. No stipend provided.
