Description of Elective Experience: 

We are a small animal practice that sees a variety of wellness, medical, surgical and dental cases.  We have 2 DVMs and 10 support staff.  We do receive some referrals from neighboring clinics.    

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.: 

We have 4 CVTs, 3 vet assistants, and 3 CSRs.

We have a full in-house lab including Idexx Catalyst, Procyte, and Sediview.  Microscope - we read a lot of our own cytology.  

We have digital x-ray.  We have a dedicated dental suite with digital dental x-rays, high and low speed hand pieces, and some advanced dental capabilities.    

We have a dedicated surgical suite for orthopedic and soft tissue surgery.  

We perform abdominal and cardiac M and B mode ultrasound exams.  We collect ultrasound guided biopsies and aspirates.  

The clinic has five exam rooms. separate feline and canine wards.  

The clinic utilizes electronic records.  

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?: 

Student responsibilities include wellness and medical exams, patient diagnostics, patient treatments all under the supervision of the managing DVM.   Students will be expected to assist in surgery and dental cases.   Depending on the students comfort level, surgical and dental opportunities will be available.   Students will be expected to create anesthesia plans for both routine and non routine procedures.  Students are expected to review their cases at the end of the day.  

The clinic is open Tuesday through Saturday.  The hours are 7:30 AM to 6 PM Tuesday through Thursday, 7:30 to 5 on Friday and 8 to noon on Saturday.  Mondays the clinic is closed, but most Mondays the managing DVM spends time on the business side of the practice.  The students will have opportunities to observe the business side of practice.    

Student Housing (include costs, amenities, pet friendly, contact info if different from elective contact info): 

There is housing available.  Pets are not allowed as we have a house full already.  The students will have their own bedroom and bath and use of the kitchen.  There is no cost for the housing.   Ability to use stairs required to access housing.
