Description of Elective Experience:

The student will have the opportunity to observe and assist in veterinary day practice medicine, including wellness and preventive visits, sick pet and emergency visits, soft tissue surgery, dentistry procedures, and laboratory work in the private practice setting. The practice sees 95% dogs and cats, and 5% pocket pets.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.:

The practice employs 6 DVM's, with a support staff of 23. Doctors are well supported and technicians are well trained. The hospital utilizes digital radiography, full in house lab equipment, Imagyst digital cytology, and ultrasound. We practice comprehensive dentistry with dental radiography. We perform many advanced soft tissue surgical procedures, including enterotomy, cystotomy, splenectomy, gastropexy, amputations, and enucleations, in addition to routine spay and neuter surgery.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?:

Full engagement and hands-on learning will be encouraged but the level of participation may be determined by the student's comfort level. We hope that students will assist in performing non-surgical procedures, physical exams, etc. The staff DVM's will engage the students actively in learning from cases seen during the rotation.

Students are expected to be in the practice approximately 40 hours a week. The schedule is flexible, as the practice is open from 8am-8pm four days a week, 9am-5pm on Friday, and 8am-noon Saturday.
