Here at Pointe Animal Hospital we would be able to provide a real world experience as a small animal general practice practitioner. Students will be given the opportunity to observe and conduct physical examinations, take and interpret radiographs, draw blood, read and interpret CBC and chem profiles, give vaccinations/medications, care for hospitalized patients, prepare and read cytologies, aid and assist in surgeries and dental cleanings and extractions, and generally aid in any of the other varied tasks that arise when acting as a general practitioner. We are quite busy for a single practitioner clinic, seeing an average of roughly 20-25 patients per day along with 2-3 surgeries per day.
Currently, we are a single doctor practice with 2 licensed full-time technicians, 1 part time LVT, one part time VA, one groomer, and one office manager who doubles as a VA as well. The doctor on staff is Chris Repke, DVM. He is an '03 graduate of MSU and has spent 12 years as an associate at VCA in White Lake, MI, and the last 2 1/2 years as owner of Pointe Animal Hospital. We have in house Idexx labs, microscope, film radiographs, dental machine, anesthetic monitor, isoflurane based anesthesia machine, and 3 exams rooms.
Our hours are M,T,Th,F 9-5, W 10-7, and Sat 9-noon. Students would be expected to be available for those hours, although exemptions could be made if necessary. Shadowing would be virtually constant throughout the day. Their support would really be determined by their desire and their competency. Frankly, I am comfortable allowing them to do as much as they want to do, as long as they can demonstrate that they can do it ably, or at least with my assistance/guidance.
Housing can be provided at no cost at Dr. Chris Repke's personal home if desired. Pets can be accomodated as well, although his dog doesn't always tolerate other dogs or cats. But any student pets could be housed at the clinic if needed.
